Do NOT change your short username! Desktop
On the Users panel of the System Prefs application, you can edit everything about your user except your short username. If you have a two button mouse, however, you can edit the field -- just right-click on it. You can't use a control-click, only the right mouse button. DO NOT DO THIS! See the comments for a reason as to why it's a Bad Thing, and why it's probably meant to be disabled!

I spotted this one on this MacFixIt board. If you go ahead and do this, you are doing so at your own risk! Be careful...consider yourself warned!

Follhardy is the one that mucks with his system, throwing caution to the wind, but I just had to give it a shot. It works. I had to re-input my passwords in Mail.app, but other than that, It seems to be the same (except for the name change)

DON"T DO IT!!!

I don't know enough about Unix, but after rebooting, all of my apps appeared as folders, and I couldn't access anything. A new user file was created with the new name, while keeping the old name and info - After trying to put things right (and failing), I just reinstalled everything... I couldn't even delete the old user setting from root. But, I had backed up all of my user info, luckily...
