Mac OS X Terminal Basics FAQ UNIX
I originally wrote this FAQ because I moderate the OS X General Discussion forum at MacNN, and there have been a ton of newbie UNIX questions recently. I figured I'd compile a FAQ: essentially UNIX for the Mac User -- An Introduction that would explain some fundamental concepts and would get a Mac user a little more confident about the big black deep that lurks underneath Aqua.

Trust me. I know how some people feel about this frightening new UNIX core -- I've seen it time and time again. This FAQ may get you on your way to using UNIX more, maybe, but above all I really hope it dispels some fears by spreading information about some basic topics. The known is always less feared than the unknown.

The FAQ is located here.

Enjoy!

Rob's been kind enough to give me prime retail space on his site (thanks, Rob!), as you can see. So you can download the Terminal Basics FAQ v1.1 from the right sidebar. There's no article on macosxhints.com, however, so if you have comments please feel free to email me directly. My email address is in the FAQ.

cheers,
gzl

How to change the keymap of the terminal window??
Authored by: kani on Jun 16, '01 02:10:47PM

I could use some help to change the keymap of the terminal window. While you can choose "Finnish" as a keymap on the control panel it doesnt help the terminal window which still uses the US-keyboard.

Anyone know?? I cant find this anywhere..

Cheers,

KANi

Update #2
Authored by: robg on Oct 11, '02 09:54:17AM
Version 2.1 is now online (linked in the top right box on the main macosxhints.com page). Here's what Neal changed:
The new material covers the following: permissions; customizing tcsh; and introduction to pico, emacs, and vi; updated material in the "useful commands" section; and updated material throughout, including bug fixes and tweaks to now-antiquated data.
If you're new to OS X, this is good reading material.

Trying to follow the link in your text gives: "Our records show that the account you're attempting to connect to either does not exist or is currently inactive."
Where is it now?
