'Turn off' column view in Open/Save panels Apps
If you hold down the option key while resizing a "new-style" open panel that uses column view, the panel will switch to a single column mode that somewhat emulates Classic open panels (except that you navigate up the filesystem by using a horizontal scroller instead of the pop-up menu at the top of the window).

I think this just works for Cocoa apps, but I haven't checked any Carbon apps to be sure. I also can't figure out if this is a bug or a feature...

No go on Carbon...

It doesn't seem to work in Carbon apps (at least not IE or iCab). Still, it's an interesting
effect. I agree with your comment as to whether it's a bug or a feature - it's hard to tell!

Watch out, though ...

I've been playing with this some more, and have realized a few (important) things:

1) This changes the open/save panels for ALL Cocoa apps, not individually.
2) This change is permanent, logging out or restarting does not change it back to regular
column view, and
3) The only way I can find to restore everything to normal is to pop into the terminal and enter:
defaults write .GlobalPreferences NSBrowserColumnWidth XXX
where XXX is the new column width
(also note the period at the front of ".GlobalPreferences")
